How did HG2 Fare in the Hottest 100?

In Uncategorized on January 28, 2007 at 9:22 pm

The Hottest 100 was on Friday. Augie March’s One Crowded Hour came in at number one. Good on them. It’s a good song, and they’re Australian, so I can’t be too picky about it.

But what we’re more interested in is how MY shortlist of 10 songs did. How close was I in picking Australia’s favourite songs of 2006? Did my votes shape history? Did I push my favourite bands over the line into Australian musical glory?

Let us have a look!

Belle & Sebastian – Funny Little Frog – NO!

Boy Least Likely To – Be Gentle With Me – NO!

Flaming Lips – It Overtakes Me – NO!

Islands – Don’t Call Me Whitney, Bobby – NO!

Panda Band – Ghosts Have The Best Time – NO!

Peter Bjorn & John – Let’s Call It Off – NO!

Red Paintings – Pickles – NO!

Scissor Sisters – Paul McCartney – NO!

Sleepy Jackson – Devil Was In My Yard – NO!

Zutons – Why Won’t You Give Me Your Love – NO!

Not ONE song that I voted for made it into the Hottest 100. I am sorely disappointed.

OK, I didn’t really expect The Boy Least Likely To to get in. But how did The Panda Band not make the 100? That’s a brilliant song, and it was ALL OVER the radio last year! As were The Zutons and Belle & Sebastian and The Sleepy Jackson!

But no! Australia decided that Youth Group’s Forever Young was more worthy. Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Dani California was infinitely cooler. My Chemical Romance’s Welcome to the Black Parade wasn’t actually a massive pile of emo shit (and neither was Panic! At The Disco’s The Only Difference Between Martyrdom & Suicide…). And Hilltop Hoods are so amazing that their whole album deserves to be in there.

I Am Not Impressed. Impressed I Am Not.

Virgin Radio

I just got a mention on Virgin Radio! Yeah!

Brilliant station. I’m in a rush, so I can’t provide a link, but if you Google ‘Virgin Radio’, you’ll find it.

Oh…

Indie Pop Rocks on Soma FM

In Uncategorized on January 22, 2007 at 6:11 pm

I’ve just found this great Internet Radio channel called Indie Pop Rocks, which is on SomaFM.

They play a heap of awesome new music, both signed and unsigned. There’s ‘classic’ stuff mixed in as well, like The New Pornographers, Doves and Grandaddy. It’s seriously good.

Internode offer it as a free (unmetered) stream, so whatever ISP you’re on might do the same as well. but whether they do or not, I really do recommend taking a look at this if you’re into this sort of music.

*EDIT* They’re playing Funny Little Frog by Belle & Sebastian right now! I LOVE THIS STATION!

*EDIT 2* They just played The Mountain Goats! Right now it’s Sufjan Stevens! THIS IS SO INCREDIBLY COOL!

The mystery of B.G. is to be solved THIS WEEK, if APIA is to be trusted!

Good evening!

B.G. has certainly got us thinking, and how! B.G. wouldn’t be a Barry by any chance, would he? I am assuming B.G. is a man, but of course, he may not be!

May I ask if B.G. is in Jamie Redfern’s line of work?

Many thanks,

half goon half god

Dear half goon half god,

B.G is in fact a guest on this weeks APIA Chat Show, whilst future guest are yet to be finalised. I hope you enjoy.

Keep your eyes out for the ‘APIA Chat Show’ this week. If last week is anything to go by, it will probably be screened on Wednesday… Possibly during A Current Affair. Who knows!

B.G!

So, yeah. I’m on the hunt for the mysterious B.G. And then I look at my blog stats for the day, and this comes up:

WHAT THE HELL?

APIA Adverts 2

In Uncategorized on January 21, 2007 at 8:36 pm

OK, as we saw in APIA Adverts, the Australian Pensioners Insurance Agency don’t want to let the cat out of the bag when it comes to who’s appearing on their new television commercials. But I thought I’d be able to pry it out of them…

Thankyou for your prompt reply!

I was wondering, seeing as you’re keeping the personalities ‘under wraps’, would you be able to sneak me some initials? It could make for a fun game between my pals and I, and then we’ll see who’s the best guesser!

Many thanks,

Dear half goon half god,

Not to give too much away, how about

B.G…..

Good luck guessing!

So now we have a mystery… Just who is B.G?

Keep in mind that Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees isn’t a D-Grade Australian celebrity. He may even be the dead Gibb. I don’t know. I’m not paid to research.

I welcome all guesses as to who B.G. is!

Trialling Ecto

In Uncategorized on January 21, 2007 at 8:19 pm

I’ve purchased and downloaded a little blog editor called Ecto. It looks pretty good. Hopefully, with its help, I will update my blog a bit more.

I might even be able to make it post stuff to LiveJournal as well as WordPress, but I’ll stick to the HalfBlog for now. LJ can come later. Perfection takes time, and at the moment, I have plenty of time.

Well, I don’t really. Work takes up a lot of that time. And pretty soon (about a month now) Uni will be occupying whatever time that work doesn’t. I’ll keep posting, however, because, quite honestly, I don’t have anything better to do! What do I do when I’m not studying? I work! What do I do when I’m not working? I study! It’s all a bit silly, really.

I’ve had plenty of time today because I took the day off of work because my head was throbbing. I think it was from the ultra-heat yesterday. I didn’t drink enough water, and it was terribly humid at work. I’m not made for humidity. Dry heat I can stand. Rain I freaking love. But when their forces combine – BLAM! Jesse is knocked out!

OK… What can I do with my new-found powers? I can do this and this and also this but I’m not really sure why I would… I can also show you exactly what I’m listening to just with the simple click of a button:

The Lost Art Of Shorthand from the album “Nervous Flashlights” by The Fauves
That’s pretty handy!

OK, that’s enough mucking about. Back to regular (now Ecto-Enhanced) updates!

APIA Adverts

In Uncategorized on January 18, 2007 at 7:22 pm

I did this for the Shaun Micallef Forum, but seeing as it’s having some problems at the moment, I thought I’d just chuck it here for now.

Backstory: I’m annoyed at the incredible awfulness of the Australian Pensioners Insurance Agency adverts, and their faux-talk show format, so I started a thread on it at the afore-mentioned forum. Somebody (can’t remember who – as I said, the forum’s down) mentioned the guests, and I got wondering who would be appearing on the ads this year. So I sent APIA an email. This is the original email, and the reply.

(Names and addresses have been changed to protect the innocent)

Hi,

I was wondering which personalities will be appearing in the APIA adverts this year. I’ve seen Jamie Redfern already – who else will be on? And more specifically, will Wilbur Wilde be making a return?

Many thanks,

As much I would like to ‘spill the beans’, unfortunately the personalities appearing in future editions will need to remain a surprise. I can say however that they will be all new personalities who have not previousluy appeared in our advertisements. Stay tuned!

I hope you enjoy them, and the light-hearted look at the experiences of some people who are Not Working Full-time and over 50 years of age.

Kind Regards

This was utterly pointless, come to think of it.

Ross Noble and the Big Rocking Horse

In Uncategorized on January 10, 2007 at 6:57 pm

I received Ross Noble’s Randomist DVD today, and got a pleasant surprise:

None other than Gumeracha’s Big Rocking Horse smiling from the DVD booklet!

Of course, the horse is also on the DVD! I took some screenshots:

“Not many people realise this – this is where they actually filmed a lot of the scenes for Alien. You know, it looks like it’s space but it’s actually inside the face of a big rocking horse.”

I think this is brilliant.
